Implementation Trainings

Putting Aided Language Input into Practice

  • January 9, 2018 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Price: Free

Description: Communication is a two-way process. As such, the successful implementation of an AAC device depends as much on the skills of the person using AAC as it does on those of the communication partners. This session will provide an overview of the characteristics, roles, and responsibilities of communication partners working with people who use AAC, with a focus on aided language input. Aided language input is a strategy in which the communication partner uses AAC to teach AAC. Shared reading will be discussed as a vehicle for learning to use aided language input to support device implementation and facilitate language learning. Participants will have the opportunity to put it to practice through a hands-on activity.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Participants will be able to define aided language input.
2. Participants will describe characteristics, roles, and responsibilities of communication partners.
3. Participants will identify how to implement AAC in the context of shared reading.

This class will be offered for 0.1 ASHA CEUs (Introductory level, Professional area). See course handouts for instructions and the ASHA CEU Participant form.

Beginning Steps To Integrate AAC In Your Classroom

  • January 24, 2018 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Price: Free

But my student can’t talk, how do we expect them to read and write?! Can an AAC device really assist in developing literacy? Communication and literacy are directly connected. By increasing the skills for one, we enhance the learning for the other skill. Students using AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) devices can often be successful in a one on one therapy environment but trying to integrate the device into an academic setting can be difficult. This course will provide participants with an overview of modeling, core vocabulary and basic skills to integrate literacy in the classroom. In order to increase communication for students using AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) devices, it is important to develop reading and writing skills for these individuals. In addition, reading and writing are critical to academic success. Participants will learn about specific implementation skills and features to increase communication and literacy in the classroom.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Participants will be able to define modeling in order to incorporate this strategy in the classroom.
2. Participants will be able to contrast core words vs. sight words and describe their importance in an academic environment.
3. Participants will be able to integrate literacy activities into a student’s day.
4. Participants will be able to demonstrate communication partner strategies to increase vocabulary development through shared reading activities.
5. Participants will be able to identify features of the Chat Editor to provide visual support and increased use of the device in an academic environment.

This class will be offered for 0.1 ASHA CEUs (Introductory level, Professional area). See course handouts for instructions and the ASHA CEU Participant form.
