Auditory Prompting

Auditory Scanning is a feature that can be used to give additional feedback to someone who uses the ChatBox 40-XT.  Auditory Scanning is particularly helpful for individuals who have limited vision or who simply benefit from an auditory feedback channel.

When the ChatBox 40-XT is set up for auditory scanning, it will speak a recorded prompt when you scan to a particular row and then each location in that row.  This will tell the device user where he/she is scanning on the keyboard.

Note: The XT model is required to allow for Auditory Prompting.

Prior to Programming the Auditory Prompts

All auditory prompts for the ChatBox 40-XT must be recorded from a human voice.  Keep the following in mind when programming auditory prompts:

  • Each overlay has its own auditory prompts.  If you are using more than one overlay, you will need to record auditory prompts for each overlay.
  • You can record an auditory prompt for each key on the overlay.  If you do not program a prompt for a particular key, the ChatBox will give the customary beep when you scan to that location.
  • If you are using Row/Column Scanning, you can program a separate ‘row’ prompt that will be used when you are scanning through the rows.  If a separate row prompt is not recorded, the ChatBox 40-XT will substitute the prompt for the first key in the row as the ‘row’ prompt.

 To Program a Key Prompt:

  • Choose MENU
  • Choose NEXT until you see “Auditory Prompts”
  • Choose SELECT
  • Choose NEXT until you see ”Record auditory prompts for keys”
  • Choose SELECT
  • Press and hold the key while speaking the prompts into the microphone

Your can either have the auditory prompts be spoken through the speaker on the ChatBox or you can plug an earphone into the top panel of the ChatBox 40-XT.  The earphone needs to be equipped with a 3.5mm mono plug and is plugged into the top panel.    To choose between speaker and earphone:
