But my student can’t talk, how do we expect them to read and write?! Can an AAC device really assist in developing literacy? Communication and literacy are directly connected. By increasing the skills for one, we enhance the learning for the other skill. Students using AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) devices can often be successful in a one-on-one therapy environment, but trying to integrate the device into an academic setting can be difficult. This course will provide participants with an overview of modeling, core vocabulary and basic skills to integrate literacy in the classroom. In order to increase communication for students using AAC devices, it is important to develop reading and writing skills for these individuals. In addition, reading and writing are critical to academic success. Participants will learn about specific implementation skills and features to increase communication and literacy in the classroom.
