Many young children who are beginning communicators need intervention to learn to interact and communicate with others. AAC, augmentative and alternative communication, can help children understand language and communicate their thoughts and ideas. AAC systems provide language input in multiple modalities (hearing, seeing, and touching), making the language signal concrete and static. Using pictures also slows the rate of communication for both the learner and the communication partners. Learning how to use an AAC system with your child may be just the boost needed to jumpstart authentic communication.
